A most magnificent word

That word, today, is BENIGN.

Thank you all for your good wishes.

May I please have some boring now?

Beginnings of resolution

Finally had the biopsy this morning. Interesting procedure, this. I apparently have sooper speshul tits, and needed to have a very specialized biopsy — a Stereotactic breast biopsy,(which you can actually watch on youtube! Wish I’d known that beforehand!)

The anticipation was MUCH worse than the actual procedure. And now I’m sore, and I have an interesting hole in my breast.

And, more importantly, I’ll have an answer by Tuesday at the latest.

Really, this can stop anytime now…

Yesterday was just a FESTIVAL of suck.

To start off with, the biopsy that was supposed to be done. by the breast specialist that my GYN INSISTED I see? Yeah, she doesn’t do that kind of biopsy. So she’s sending me to the facility that the initial radiologist wanted to send me to in the first place, the one my GYN WOULD NOT LET ME GO TO BECAUSE I HAD TO SEE THE BREAST SPECIALIST!!!!!

Do I even have to say that my GYN is FIRED?

Then, when I got home and had my head clear enough to pay bills, I discovered that my business credit card was apparently skimmed. Probably at the gas station, one of the few times I used it to get gas.

And the damn thing is that they used it to order CREDIT REPORTS! Not even mine — THEIR OWN! Experian now has the card locked out of their system, and is looking into what happened. My card has been stopped and I’ll be getting a new one.

God DAMN can this be over now?

I could use a little boring right now…

I’ve decided that 2012 is more than likely going to be sacked within the next couple of weeks. And the medical community in Central Florida seems to be heavily influenced by the 1960s Batman.

Why?

Well, let’s just say that the first two weeks of this year have been a HELL of a lot more interesting than I could ever have wanted. And this is not interesting in a good way.

Being 40 (yes, there’s my real age out on the internet), I should have had a baseline mammogram done a couple of years ago. Only one problem with that idea. When you’re a nursing mother, NO ONE will do a baseline mammogram. They simply will not go near you. There’s absolutely NO reason not to. It’s perfectly safe. The only thing is that unless you drain the breast very well, it is harder to read the films. And, since it’s harder, they won’t do it.

So, I had my very first mammogram done on the 28th of December. The tech was very nice, and she pointed out that since I was a… greatly endowed female, the chances of my being called back in were pretty high. She told me that in this situation, 8 out of 10 women got called back in. Not a problem. So I was expecting it when I got the call that I needed to schedule another test.

I wasn’t expecting them to tell me that they wanted to do another test because they found something.

Yesterday, I had another mammogram. And an ultrasound. And… all they can tell me is that there is something there. The doctor is being very positive — there is an 80% chance that whatever this thing is is benign. It’s small, and the edges are well-defined and smooth. But, to be on the safe side, they want to do a needle biopsy.

That will happen sometime next week. (See where the Batman reference comes in? “Want to know what’s going to happen? Tune in NEXT WEEK!”)

Now, the first thing that ran through my mind when I got the news (last Wednesday) was the news about Boing Boing’s Xeni Jardin, who went in for her first ever mammogram at 30, and was diagnosed with breast cancer in the office the same day. Part of my brain is going “They didn’t keep her hanging two weeks. So what they found in me is probably nothing.”

Unfortunately, the freaking out part of my brain is a heck of a lot LOUDER than the logical part of my brain right now. And I’ve got a long week ahead of me. Good thing I sublimate really well — I’m gonna get a heck of a lot of writing done!

I’ll keep you all posted. And hey, if you’re past 35…. go get a mammogram.

An update is in order

Since I finished Heart’s Master, I need to update the to-do list. So here’s the queue, going in to 2012.

I’m bumping Tales from the Arena down to the outline list,  because I need to figure out where that story is coming from and where it is going. Which means that my first 2012 project will either be the YA romance The Willow Sword, or diving back into Sea Prince with Danielle (who I worked with on Nomad’s Moon).

And I might spend the holiday break doing the outline for Holy Orders, which will be the next in the Drum Mage series. Yep, another Nick and Steven novel. Since I have them on the brain, planning out the next one might not be the worlds worst idea (especially since Holy Palmer’s Kiss is ALSO a Nick and Steven story!)

To Revise:

  • Holy Palmer’s Kiss (due end of January)
  • Heart’s Master

To Write:

  • The Willow Sword
  • Sea Prince (To be written with Danielle Jones)
  • Wanderer’s Moon (next book in the Midnight Moon series. Not to be done until we sell Nomad’s Moon)

To Outline

  • Playing For Keeps (short story to launch Tales from the Arena)
  • Coral Throne (sequel to Sea Prince)
  • Hidden Things (Mystere Book 1)
  • The Lady and the Sword (Mystere Book 2)
  • Ashes and Light (Mystere Book 3)
  • Tablets of Stone (Mystere Book 4)
  • Rainbow Wars (the teach-in idea. Definitely a  YA. And it needs a better title)
  • Holy Orders ( Sequel to Heart’s Master)

To Sell

  • Nomad’s Moon
  • Exile’s Moon
  • Infernal Machine (reprint, sent to Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica)

The Muse has spoken…

One persnickity Muse, in particular. Who has let me know in no uncertain terms that Drum Mage isn’t a good title anymore,  and that the title of this book is now Heart’s Master. Which I have to admit is more appropriate.

The Lion, The Witch and the To-Do List.

Well, I accomplished my summer goals — two days past my deadline. But I’m okay with that. This afternoon, I finished the worldbuilding for Tales from the Arena. So now, I’m letting Danielle take a look at it, poke it with a stick, and see if I left anything out. While she does that, I’ll get my head back into Drum Mage and start editing what I have so that I can get back to work.

And there’s a new task on the list — revising Nomad’s Moon, the High Fantasy novel that I wrote with Danielle Jones. After a year and a half in the queue, Baen passed on it. It is, however, still out with another, smaller press. So we’ll see what they say, and then see if we need to revise.

To Revise:

  • Nomad”s Moon (?) — Wait for response from small press

To Write:

  • Drum Mage
  • Playing For Keeps (short story to launch Tales from the Arena)
  • The Willow Sword
  • Sea Prince (To be written with Danielle Jones)
  • Wanderer’s Moon (next book in the Midnight Moon series. Not to be done until we sell Nomad’s Moon)

To Outline

  • Coral Throne (sequel to Sea Prince)
  • Hidden Things (Mystere Book 1)
  • Blood and Gaslight (Mystere Book 2)
  • Ashes and Light (Mystere Book 3)
  • Tablets of Stone (Mystere Book 4)
  • Rainbow Wars (the teach-in idea. Definitely a  YA. And it needs a better title)
  • As-yet-untitled Steven and Nick book. Sequel to Drum Mage.

To Sell

  • Nomad’s Moon
  • Exile’s Moon
  • Silk Skin (short story)
  • House of Sable Locks

Crawling out from under the rock.

Oh, yeah. I have a blog.

Sorry. Been busy working on synopsi, doing worldbuilding and taking online classes. The Willow Sword synopsis is done. Drum Mage is almost done.  The worldbuilding for Tale from the Arena is started, and is going to be a lot of fun to flesh out. I might post some maps, if I can work out just how to get the GIMP to clean up my scanned drawings.

And these classes?  Are the number one reason I love the Romance Writers of America! Members of the RWA get free classes, taught by people who really know their stuff. This lovely website is courtesy of an RWA class. Right now, I’m taking one on Three-Act structure, which has really shown me where I need to work on Drum Mage.

So I’ve been plodding along, working on things, and trying not to think about the fact that we’re in the final countdown to two major milestones — the first day of kindergarten, and someone’s fifth birthday, both of which happen on the same day.

Just so you know, in three weeks, I’m going to be a BASKETCASE.

General updatiness.

Last night, I finished the synopsis on The Willow Sword. Oh, I cannot wait to write this one!!!

Two nights ago, I was invited (somewhat last minute) to an online book chat for Carnal Machines. The actual guest was D.L King, the editor, but when she found out I was online, she had me plug The House of Sable Locks. And she told the story about how the anthology is essentially all my fault, which was very cool.

Which reminds me that I don’t think I’ve told that story. I submitted The Succubus to D.L King for her Spank! anthology.  She loved it, but it wasn’t right for that book. So I get this email from her, basically saying “I love it, I want to use it. I’m going to pitch a steampunk anthology to Cleis, JUST SO I CAN PUBLISH THIS STORY. Is that okay with you?”

Um…. is the Emperor Palpatine Catholic?

So yeah, all my fault. And sitting on that news for MONTHS while she assembled the rest of that stellar anthology was sheer torture.

Now I’ll get back to work on Drum Mage, and figuring out where I went wrong and how to fix it. I have just about one month left in summer vacation, then I’ll get myself back to work!
