Little Things

Little Things

It’s the little things that really drive it home when you’re not running at full capacity. Things like… picking up something you’ve dropped when you’re not allowed to BEND, for example.

I had my first post-surgical followup with the neurosurgeon last week, and she’s pleased with how I’m doing. I’m still on restrictions — no bending, twisting or lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk for another two weeks. No pool for another two weeks. But I’m tapering off the medication (can’t stop it abruptly. Bad Things Happen.), and I’m being referred out for physical and occupational therapy. I’m planning on waiting to start those until I can drive myself, which will happen once I’m no longer on the fuzzy-making medication three times a day.

Right now, my return to work date is set for the last week of July/first week of August, and will start with my newsletter coming out. That doesn’t mean that I’m not currently doing SOME business related things. Just… they’re all little things. I’m planning a new series (slowly, because fuzzy brains). I did my quarterly taxes today. I closed up my shop at Native Home Marketplace at the end of our contract in June. I love the shop and the people there, but there wasn’t enough of a return on investment to warrant another year. However, if you’re in the area, you should head to the Volusia Mall and check them out! Today, Darling Editor and I are working on a mid-year inventory. And later this week, when I have more of a brain, I need to do my mid-year business plan review.

Yes, I have a business plan. I couldn’t tell you what was on it at the moment, but I have a plan.

Is it a clever plan? Ehhhh…..

Ask me again when I’m not fuzzy.

And Now… We Wait.

And Now… We Wait.

And now… we wait. What are we waiting for?

Last week, I sat down with the neurosurgeon. She walked into the room and asked, “Do you have your phone?”

Me: “Yes.”

Her: “Good. Take a picture of this. I want you to see what we’re talking about.”

So I have a photo on my phone of my spine, and of the disc that has breached containment. (Surgeon: “See that bulge? It should NOT look like that.”) I was ordered to stop PT immediately, to start walking in the pool to keep my activity up, and to wait.

Again, what are we waiting for? For our insurance to decide that we’ve sacrificed the right amount of goats and chickens, and can be allowed to proceed with surgery. When that happens, the surgical coordinator will call me and we can set up a date to take care of things. It could happen as soon as this week, or it could take a month. Ask the Magic Eight Ball, because I certainly don’t know.

(There is a safety net built in to this process. If the pain increases, or if anything changes for the worse, I am to report IMMEDIATELY to the ER.)

Given the fact that I have no idea when that call is coming in, I’ve cancelled both of my June shows. So if you were looking forward to seeing me at Summer Lovin’ at the Oviedo Mall or at the Enchanted Knights Renaissance Faire in Sanford, I’m sorry to say I will not be there. Last week, I thought I’d be able to make it work. Now? I know I’m not up for it.

I’m also putting the blog on hiatus starting now. This will be the last post until recovery. I’ll still be posting to my social media, so you’ll be able to keep up with me there. But for now? Take care of each other, and I’ll see you on the other side.

Still Rolling.

Still Rolling.

The ball is still rolling, and I don’t have any firm answers yet. Tomorrow, I will sit down with the neurosurgeon, and we’ll see where things go from there. I have my records and my imaging discs, and I’m about as ready as I can be, and I really just kind of want to go in and say “I’m broken. Fix me.”

Can you tell I’m just so DONE with this?

Once I have this appointment, I’ll be able to make some better decisions about upcoming shows. I don’t like the not knowing part of all of this. I think that based on today’s date, and how long it might take to do all the testing, I’ll still be able to do the Summer Lovin’ show at Oviedo Mall, but the Enchanted Knights Renn Faire in Sanford is questionable. (More information on both of those is below.)

There might be a supplemental post tomorrow. We shall see. For now….

The Ball is Rolling.

The Ball is Rolling.

I had another pain management appointment today, and the ball is rolling. What ball? The one that involves a referral to a neurosurgeon for spinal surgery to relieve the pressure on my sciatic nerve. My pain doctor and I are in agreement — surgery is the best option for me.

Which means that I’m now on crunch time. I NEED to finish King of Swords and Six More Weeks of Witches as soon as humanly possible.

I don’t know what this is going to mean for my summer shows. It all depends on when the surgery is scheduled, and we’re not there yet. Be advised that some of the shows on my calendar will probably be going away. More on that as I know more.

I’ve put my newsletter on hiatus for the foreseeable future. I’m probably going to do the same with the blog. I’m going to hold off on putting this on the shelf until I know more and have a date. And I’ll be continuing to plan for the shows until I know for certain I can’t attend. So for my next show, I’ll be back to the Oviedo Mall on June 6th for the Summer Lovin’ book festival. After that, I just confirmed that we’ll be in the vendor pavilion at the Enchanted Knights Solstice Faire in Sanford, Florida. We’re taking over the town, folks!

More news as I find out more.

That Wore Off Quickly.

That Wore Off Quickly.

Today is that one day of the year when I can’t see for most of a day. Yes, it’s time for my annual retinal exam, when I get dilated enough to see through the veil and wave to the Fae. Fun times. Usually, I take a nap after and sleep it off. Today, though? I could see much sooner than I expected. So that wore off quickly.

This is a good thing — it let me get back to work sooner than I would normally. I had a lot to do today. Since my author proof of The Coral Throne hasn’t come in yet, I had to go and approve the digital proof of the paperback so it would be ready in time for release day next week. I had to collate the votes for the Lord Ruthven Award and send the winners on to the ICFA program editor. I had my regular Monday paperwork. And now I’m here, writing to you.

I still haven’t written a word on King of Swords. But before I get into that, I have to go back through Dead Man’s Hand and update it on a detail that the characters only JUST told me Friday. I hope I’ll get all my words in before bed, but I also need to make sure the worldbuilding is consistent.

(insert three hour break for dinner and cleanup…)

And so, having disposed of the monster dirty dishes, exit our hero to the keyboard stage left…

Stage Right

Stage Right

“And so, having disposed of the monster, exit our hero through the front door, stage right….”

If you’re of a certain age, you might recognize that quote from the Bugs Bunny cartoon “Hair-raising Hare.”

Being of a certain age, I tend to trot this line out once I’ve accomplished something that i really didn’t want to do in the first place.

In other news, I was dismissed from jury duty today. Mostly because I told the judge I have a doctor appointment tomorrow that I scheduled months ago, and that’s appointment three of four in the series. But I’m very grateful I’d already handed in Witchmas, because this was a federal jury, and the federal courthouse rules say no electronics in the courthouse. If you bring your phone in, you have to turn it off and put it in a locker. Absolutely no laptops, tablets, Kindles…

I brought a notebook to work on future worldbuilding for the Coven Tree universe (Witchmas is just the start), and my copy of ZomRomCom by Olivia Dade. I got some reading done, but no worldbuilding work. Which is okay. I don’t have to go back tomorrow, so I can clean for Thanksgiving and work on planning.

Exit our hero through the front door, stage right.

The Only Constant is Change

The Only Constant is Change

Have you heard the phrase “The only constant is change?” It’s true, especially in publishing. Trends change, and you have to go with it.

And that’s why the entire Blood of the Raven series is getting new covers to celebrate the release of book three!

Wait, what? Didn’t book 2 just come out a few months ago?

Yes, yes it did. And yes, I do love that cover. But it appears that the cover art trend is shifting, and that shiny new cover is already dated. So… shiny new covers! AND… new titles!

Princes of Air was already due a new cover, but now the title will be in line with the other two books, and it will officially be book one of the Blood of the Raven series, under the title Ravenborn.

Raven’s Fall will now be known as Ravenfall (one word). That and the new cover are the only changes

Which brings us to the newest bird in the flock.

Ravenflight is now available for preorder on Amazon and through the Riverdale Avenue Book page. (The paperback is only at the publisher right now, but more sites are coming.) Ravenflight launches on October 18th.

Given the mid-October release date, I will not have Ravenflight on my table until Maker Faire in November, and I may not have all the new covers to sell until the Enchanted Knights Winter Bazaar in December. We shall see. If I do have them all at Maker Faire, there will be a series discount.

Ready…Set…Wait….

Ready…Set…Wait….

That’s the current mood on our house. Ready…set…wait…wait…wait… We’re almost entirely ready for Necronomicon. We just need to pack. But there’s a blob that’s soon to be named Helene in the Caribbean right now. She’s heading for the Gulf of Mexico at the moment, and she may ALSO be heading for Tampa this week.

Driving into what projections say might be a Category 2 hurricane doesn’t seem like my idea of a good time. Hence, the “wait” part of the program. Right now, IF she comes to Tampa or the area just north, it looks like it will be Thursday. But we will see, and then we will decide.

Welcome to Florida in the Fall.

If there is a convention and we attend, then we’ll have a great time. I have five panels — two on Friday night and three on Saturday.

  • Friday, 9PM — Guess the Spec Fic Author By Their Sex Scene (Mystery Science Sex Scene 3K)
  • Friday, 10PM — I Want to Verb Your Noun (the annual Writing Sex panel returns!)
  • Saturday, 10AM — Author Quarters 2 (Reading from something non-spicy)
  • Saturday, 5PM — Gardening vs. Building (Pantsing and Plotting)
  • Saturday, 8PM — Cosmic Construction (Worldbuilding)

In addition, I have a table in Author Alley. Remember that if you tell me you’re a newsletter subscriber or follow me on social media, you get discounts! In addition, I’ll be running a Necro sale — 25% off everything except digital items and book bundles.

If things end up being wet and squally and we stay home, then I’ll run a Necro sale on signed books through my website, and I’ll put things up on sale on Smashwords (easiest place to put up a coupon.)

So… ready…set…wait…wait…wait….

I’ll be participating in a Stuff Your Kindle event from October 18-20th. There are over 400 books that will be free or discounted for that weekend, and I’ll have Written in Water up for free!

Closing In On The End.

Here we are, closing in on the end of 2023. Halloween is tomorrow, and then we get into November and the slow slide toward a new year. Yesterday, I hit the halfway point on Balance of Power, which means I’m well on my way to finishing the book by December, just in time for Cookiepocalypse. Planning for 2024 has started (slowly, but it has started), and I’m looking forward to closing the book on 2023.

It’s been a good year. A weird year, but a good one. I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve come to a lot of realizations that will change how I work going forward. What, you ask? Well, working multiple projects at a time isn’t something sustainable for me anymore, to start with. I have to focus on one thing at a time in each category — planning, researching, writing and editing. If I try to do more than one in each category, then none of the others get done. Time to adjust so I can accomplish more by doing less.

I forget if I let you all know that Written in Water didn’t make the finals for SPFBO. It had a fabulous review, though. You can see the finalists here, and there’s still one more to come (by tomorrow, I think!)

So what’s in the cards for 2024? Keeping in mind that things are still in the squidgy, warm Jello stages of planning, 2024 holds at least one convention (possibly three — I applied to present at ICFA, and I’m in the waiting list for a convention that I’ve never done before), more events with the Cavalcade, at least one but possibly two books from Riverdale Avenue Books (Morrigan’s Heir is still on the roster for this year, but they have Bonds of Blood and Steel, and I will be sending them Morrigan’s Wrath once I finish the Heir edits.) There will be at least one self-published book — that would be Balance of Power, and getting research done for Imaginative Anthropology and for the worldbuilding for Iron and Silk.

So, if I keep with the categories, here’s my 2024 starting lineup.

  • Planning:
    • ???? (at the moment, I have a pile of story outlines ready to go. So this with either stay empty for a bit, or just be business planning.)
  • Research
    • Imaginative Anthropology
      • Iron and Silk research when done
  • Writing
    • The Sea Prince
      • ???? when done (Either Tales from the Arena: Dead Man’s Hand or Tower of Light.)
  • Editing
    • Balance of Power
      • Either The Sea Prince or whatever comes back first from RAB.

I’m looking at perhaps a March or April publishing date for Balance of Power, but that will depend on several factors (how long edits take, how long cover creation takes, and what other books I have releasing and when.)

On a personal level, someone who lives in my house and is taller than I am now graduates in the spring of 2024, and starts college in the fall. All the applications are in, applications for scholarships have started, and we do the financial aid paperwork in December. Then we wait…

Oh, and there’s a two-years-postponed vacation in there somewhere. I really can’t wait for that!

Hinges

I’m writing this up on July 3rd, so we’re just past the hinge of the year, heading on toward the end. Time to reflect on what worked for the first half of the year, and plan for the rest of the year…

Yeah, I don’t really do that. It sure sounds good, though.

I do like the concept of the hinge, though. The hinge is where your direction changes. It’s where your potential changes. Things that were previously closed can now be opened. I talk a lot about pranayama breathing — specifically, box breathing or four-sided breathing. That’s where you breathe in for a set count (for beginners, you can start with a four count.) You hold it for four, then breathe out for hour. Hold it for four and repeat. It’s fantastic for helping center and quiet anxiety, and for increasing focus, but the pause at the top of the breath is where potential lies. It’s where tension builds up for the release.

It’s the hinge.

Hinges also factor into storytelling. If you’re writing three-act structure, you have a couple of hinges where your direction changes. But if you’re writing to a climax (stop laughing…), then the hinge is the midpoint and where you start to bring the story home. It’s where the tension releases and you start the slow descent off the mountain to the conclusion. You might have other, smaller hinges along the way — foothills are a thing, after all — but your major momentum is starting to release.

If you don’t like the mountain analogy, you can think roller coasters. I’m not particularly a fan of roller coasters, but it’s fun to watch them.

We’re starting to release toward the end of the year now. Yes, it’s still 90 million degrees out, and tomorrow there will be fireworks, we’re past the hinge of the year. Time to start thinking about bringing it home.

I’ve laid out my kanban board for the next quarter — I’m going to finish Broken Feathers (hopefully this week), and keep on researching for Imaginative Anthropology. I’ll be starting back with The Sea Prince in August, and D, the person with whom I originally wrote the first few chapters, is back on board to finish it! We’re going over the first thirteen chapters now. I have one or two pure business things to work on, and in three months, I’ll revisit and see where we are on the path of bringing 2023 to a close.

Right now? We’re about halfway.

SALES: My entire catalog is on sale at Smashwords for their annual sale, running July 1 through July 31. Because of Draft2Digital acquiring Smashwords, I have two catalog pages (that I’m assured with be merged later this year.) So you can find some of my books here, and the rest here.
