Setting Sail!

Setting Sail!

No, we’re not going on another cruise. Not this year, anyway. The Sea Prince is setting sail on June 10th! I got the cover teaser for The Sea Prince on Friday morning. It’s down a little bit, and I am loving this cover (another winning cover from GetCovers!). Full cover reveal and the preorder link will both come at the end of the week, so keep an eye on my socials for that.

Your klutzy author managed to keep from stretching her length (and possibly hurting herself badly) in the parking lot at Ikea this weekend. I saved myself by catching the door pillar of my car with my left hand, and something with my right thigh. I have no idea what, but the bruises in the left arm and right leg are starting to come in despite slathering arnica on it as soon as we got home. There was also a general “wrench everything OW!” that goes with stopping a heavy something (me. I’m something) in mid-fall.

I’m fine. Nothing broken. But ugh… gravity is not my friend.

We’re coming up on the end of the spring quarter, which means that I’m supposed to be coming up on the end of a manuscript. Ah… not really? I’m hoping to have both The Coral Throne and King of Swords wrapped by the end of June, though. Which means I really need to get moving because neither of them are even halfway done. I might have to put one to the side to focus on the other if I want to have anything finished before I take July and August off. But which one?

Probably King of Swords, to be honest. I’m self-publishing The Coral Throne, which means I need a faster turnaround. If I get the two Tales from the Arena books off to the publisher by the end of the year, rather than in the Fall, it’s still going to be a time before they see print. Getting The Coral Throne done means I may be able to finish out the series by the end of the year (assuming that it stays two books, which for me is a pretty big assumption.)

Decisions, decisions. I’m also still waffling on what to write next.

I have an in-person show this weekend. Come see me in Ormond Beach at the 6th annual Mother’s Day Bazaar, being held at the Ormond Beach Elk’s Club. More details down below, or at the link.

Coming Soon!

Image of a tall ship on a blue background. The words The Sea Prince. Elizabeth Schechter are superimposed over the ship. A book with a ripped wrapping is on the left of the ship, the rip revealing a similar blue background and a partial image of a man with a beard.

TARJIAAN: To end the war with the Empire, all Prince Tarjiaan has to do is deny his heart and marry the Emperor’s granddaughter.

DAANIR: His newly-awakened magic saved his prince, but the cost was his place at Tarjiaan’s side.

NIKA: Forced to marry Tarjiaan, the Butcher of Meradon, she expects a monster, but finds a man willing to fight the world for her before he even knows her name.

Together, Tarjiaan, Daanir and Nika must navigate a course through secrets, truths and lies in an attempt to end an endless war. But there’s an unseen threat lurking below the waves, and the battle is much closer to home than any of them expected.

The Sea Prince sets sail on June 10th!

Cover reveal and preorder link coming NEXT WEEK.

Brain Break!

Brain Break!

For some reason, last week ended up being a brain break for me. There was very little writing done, and a lot of reading. I reread Heir to the Firstborn (yes, I reread my own books), and found a continuity error in one that I can’t believe I made, and that I also can’t believe NO ONE has caught! (If you do catch it, email me and identify it, and you can have your choice of any book in my catalog!) I also started The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch, which is all kinds of adorable!

I have a draft of a cover for The Sea Prince, and I’m really excited to be able to show it to you… soon. Ish. Soonish. It’s not quite ready for prime-time yet. We’re on round two of revisions, and it’s closer than it was. Close enough that I can’t confidently say YES, we have a release date! The Sea Prince will finally release on June 10th! Preorders will be live as soon as that cover is finalized.

Now that the house is back together, I need to take all of the book boxes and show stuff out of my closet and get ready for the 6th Annual Mother’s Day Bazaar in Ormond Beach on May 10th. I haven’t done this show yet, but I’ve found that shows on the beach seem to do really well for us (maybe it’s because beach reads? I don’t know.) As always, if you come find me at the show and tell me that you saw this post or any of my social media, you get a 10% discount on your total purchase.

Oddly enough, I’m at about the same point in both works in progress right now — about a third of the way into each book. Usually, when I work on more than one thing at a time, one of them will attempt to eat my brain, and I’ll be a lot further along with that one than the other. Not this time. I’m hoping to have them both done by the end of June, so that I can work on edits before I take time off over the summer. My goal is to have both Tales from the Arena manuscripts in to my publisher in the fall, and have The Coral Throne out before the holidays. Let’s see how close I get!

What’s next? Well, I’m currently doing the research for Iron and Silk, my Venetian inspired pirate princess series that’s been in my brain since 2022. I might start The Iron Virgin in the fall. Or I might start Crossroads, since the Covert Saloon series plan is still fresh in my brain. Or there’s that Metropolis retelling that I was challenged to write…

Decisions, decisions.

We’ll see which one yells loudest in September.

FaRo-What?

FaRo-What?

Yesterday, my husband/Darling Editor looked at my calendar and asked “FaRo-What? What’s FaRoBub?

“It’s a book promo event. One day only, 200 free books. I’ve got Hidden Things in for free download. That reminds me. I need to get KDP to call me. It’s not free on Amazon yet.”

So that was part of my Sunday — making sure that Hidden Things was free for today. And it is, and people have noticed and WOW, that’s a lot of downloads! I hope everyone who grabs a copy enjoys it!

Tomorrow, the fun starts of getting the prices turned back on. That’s always an adventure.

I’m finding that writing has been… interesting over the past month. I may have to shelve one of these books I’m working on and focus completely on the other, because writing TWO books where the main theme is standing up against tyranny and injustice to protect a weakened nation is a bit much for my heart right now. I may focus on The Coral Throne, because the turnaround on getting that published will be faster than on King of Swords. I’m looking at publishing The Sea Prince in late spring or early summer, so focusing on book 2 of that series seems to make more sense. I haven’t even started my editing run on Dead Man’s Hand, which will be going in to my publisher because it’s part of a series.

If I sound like I’m trying to convince myself, you have much to go on.

I have a release date for Morrigan’s Heir — I’ve been told we go LIVE February 11th! There isn’t a preorder link yet, but that will come sometime this week and I’ll post it to all the socials once I have it. I also received permission to share the cover, which is below. This cover has been a long time coming — that stock image (and the stock image that will be on Morrigan’s Wrath) were purchased years ago, and I sat on them until it was time to put together the covers, when I sent them to the cover artist and said “What can we do with these?”

I can’t wait to see it in print! I’ll have copies by the Enchanted Knights event in March — they won’t get to me in time for Saturday.

Yes, this Saturday! I’m gearing up for our first in person event of the new year. Love is in the Air is this Saturday from 10AM to 3PM at the Lakeside Community Center in Port Orange, Florida. If you get there early, there will be swag bags for the first people through the door (18+ only), and in those bags, you’ll find a little something from me! You have to come early to find out what, but I assure you that it’s cute.

Time to get back to work!

Tenth Anniversary!

I have to lead with this gorgeous thing — the tenth anniversary cover for House of Sable Locks

Isn’t he LOVELY???

This went live sometime over the weekend, and I missed it until this morning, when I received a spam email from a book promoter about my “new book” House of Sable Locks.

That’s very much William… which is funny because that particular model is also on the cover of Infernal Machine! Clearly, the art director and I have similar tastes in steampunk cover models.

The tenth anniversary cover is still going out to all the booksellers and isn’t yet up everywhere. If you want one now, you can get it directly from the publisher.

In other news, I got the news this week that Written in Water was cut from SPFBO, and will not be continuing on in the contest. The reviewer was incredibly positive about the book, and loved the series as well. Really, I can’t complain — the entire experience has been amazing from start to finish. You can read the review here.

In and around working on The Sea Prince and Balance of Power, I’m planning out what the next book will be. Part of that depends on one thing that is out of my control — which books that are out for consideration sell. If I don’t have an answer for that by the time I finish with either of the two books I’m working on now, then I think the next thing I will write will be either The Iron Virgin (aka Pirate Princess), or Tower of Light (aka gay steampunk retelling of Metropolis). I’m not sure which, because it all depends on which one yells at me the loudest.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing this whole full-time writer thing over ten years now. What a trip this has been! I have to say, it’s not getting old — I love every minute of it!

Fourth and Goal

No, I don’t watch football. Well, not anymore. I used to, but the last time I watched football really was… well, yesterday, to be honest. But it was the Funday Football on Disney+, where they did real time animation of the football game from London (it was hilariously glitchy.) No, In this case, fourth and goal doesn’t mean how far you have to go in football. It’s how far we have to go in 2023. October 1st marks the beginning of the fourth quarter. I’ve done my fourth quarter planning and my goals are up on my kanban board. It’s time to look toward bringing this year to a close.

Kanban, research shelf and Ink.

My immediate goals? Finish Balance of Power. Keep working on The Sea Prince. Edits on Morrigan’s Heir will be in some time this month, so I’ll be turning those around to get the book out by the end of 2023. And then I have to revise Morrigan’s Wrath to get that in to the editor. The anniversary edition of House of Sable Locks will be coming out soon (how soon? I don’t know!) and there are things to be done for that. There’s research that I really should get back to doing, although that’s lower priority to closing out the year and revisiting my business plan for 2024. I’m also considering pulling some of my short stories and getting them up for sale, but that may be a 2024 goal and not a 2023 goal.

Balance of Power

The Sea Prince

Work on The Sea Prince has slowed down a little, and will slow down even more once the edits come in. Co-writing is much more of a juggling act than writing a book solo, because my interruptions rarely coincide with Danielle’s interruptions, which means that one of us is usually waiting on the other to look over things. We’ll eventually get the hang of this and get this book done.

The SPFBO judges have to announce their finalists by October 31st. This means that, at some point this month, I will find out if Written in Water will continue on in the contest. I’m surprisingly okay with either option. There are so many amazing books that have been cut already so if I am cut, I’ll be in fantastic company.

Keep an eye out for a special blog post/newsletter post in the next week or so — I’ll be able to show you the beautiful new cover of House of Sable Locks!

Back to School… Sort Of

I decided that even though someone doesn’t start classes for another week, I’m getting back to work on the actual school schedule. So when the high school went back to school, I went back to work. Balance of Power and The Sea Prince are both underway. Chapter one of Balance of Power went live on the Patreon last week, I’m currently finishing up chapter three, and Danielle (my co-author) and I are underway with The Sea Prince.

As a reminder, Brave New Worlds is still ongoing for another two weeks, which means that you can still grab up to 50 Science Fiction and Fantasy novels and enter for a $20 gift card. You can grab a copy of Written in Water there, just for signing up for my newsletter.

I realized (at the urging of a colleague, that I really needed to get around to updating the cover for Worlds Begin, the Heir to the Firstborn creation myth, so that it matches the rest of the series.

I got the new cover the other day, and It. Is. GORGEOUS!

Cover for Worlds Begin. A wreath of green leaves and flowers, surrounding the title Worlds Begin in gol

(Reminder — Worlds Begin is a freebie everywhere EXCEPT Amazon, who refuses to set books permanently free. If you want it on Amazon, please price match. Or download from Smashwords and use Send to Kindle.)

I’ve also seen and approved the 10th anniversary cover for House of Sable Locks, but I haven’t yet been given permission to share it. Yes, my “modern erotic classic you’ve never heard of” (according to the now-defunct Cliterati website), is now ten years old. I can’t believe it either. (At some point, you all will see the sequel. It’s written. I promise. And there will be another, but that one is a title and a vague idea.)

There isn’t much else happening at the moment. Waiting on edits to come in, waiting on new books to arrive for Necronomicon in September — I will have copies of Princes of Air on the table! But for now? Time to go make some more words!

Catch you next week, hopefully with a new cover to show you!

Not a Bad Start

Week two of 2023, and we’re getting back into the swing of things. Getting up for school isn’t as much as a slog, and the 30 day yoga challenge is going nicely. And the words are flowing, although I have learned my lesson — do not save all of the sex scenes up to write them later, because then… you have to write them later, which takes FOREVER because writing sex may be fun, but it’s also SLOW.

The White Raven: Morrigan’s Wrath
(The White Raven Duology, Book 2)

I’m working my way back toward a sustainable schedule, which means that writing and editing happens during the week, research happens whenever, and administrative stuff happens on the weekends (unless it’s something I can’t put off.) So I did inventory this past weekend to count the books that I have on hand.

Anyone want to buy some books? Signed and personalized!

Funny story about that website. I was discussing doing sales through your own website and not through a third-party site (in this case, Etsy), and I mentioned that I use the Square API through my website which helps with inventory. And I gave them the link I just posted above, and went to look at the site myself.

And that’s when I noticed I’ve been using an outdated graphic for months. Out of all the covers on the old graphic, only a couple were current! And I use that graphic on the website, and on my newsletter, and on my Facebook page and… lots of places! So now there’s a nice, new, current graphic in all the places.

Next up for administrative stuff? Taxes. Once the royalty reports come in, that is.

The edits on The Chronicles of John Zebedee are coming along nicely. I could wish that the cover art revisions were going better, but… it can’t all be lightning in a bottle. I’m using the same designers who worked on the amazing covers for Heir to the Firstborn, so I was expecting something amazing for Chronicles of John Zebedee. What I got was something that read strongly as space western. Then more space western. After the third space western, I had to be clear that I’m not writing space cowboys. Not this time, anyway. The next two covers were western, hold the space. And the one I got today was… well, I’m not sure what it was, but it was not fantasy or romance. The book doesn’t come out until March. I have time. But this is getting frustrating. I can’t run ads without a cover, because I can’t set up the preorder until I have a cover image. Well, I could, but changing out the “cover coming soon!” graphic is a pain in the fundament. I have a couple of books on Goodreads that the default cover is the Cover Coming Soon graphic, and I can’t get them changed to the actual cover. (I change it, and GR changes it back!)

I found out this weekend that I wasn’t chosen as a program participant for Boskone this year, which I’m fine with. More applicants than places to put them, which I understand. I had a lot of fun last year, and we’ll see if I can get invited back another year. I’ve booked my room for ICFA, so that’s the next place I’ll be. Possibly running around doing tech again, because that was fun last year. And I haven’t yet heard when the applications open for Necronomicon, but I do want to go back. We shall see what comes of the wanting.

Catch you all next week!

This is Halloween.

Sitting here today in my witchy tights, wearing a tarot card t-shirt. There are pumpkins in the living room, and a metric ton of candy that I can’t eat. The soundtrack for today includes Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and my son went to school today wearing a colander on his head….

Yup. It’s Halloween.

I really do feel for the teachers today and tomorrow. Today they have excited kids looking forward to tonight (assuming that they didn’t do one of the many trunk-or-treat events this past weekend.) Tomorrow they’ll have exhausted, sugar-buzzed kids who will NOT want to do a durn thing.

Tonight, we’ll get the table set up in the driveway, and for the first time in two years, I’ll dress and go sit outside to give out candy. (Yes, I will be masked.) I need to put new batteries in my lightsaber.

Boy, that’s a string of words that I never before thought about putting together in that order.

For now, though, I’ve done my usual Monday things. Yoga. PT. Done the dishes. Need to put together a grocery order, but that’s for once I’m done with the blog post. And then there will be words. Hopefully, all the words before I have to head out to school, because I doubt I’ll get much done outside.

Preorders are still open for Visions in Smoke and Children of Dreams. Visions in Smoke comes out November 8th, and Children of Dreams on November 15th. The paperback for Children of Dreams in also available for preorder wherever you buy print books. And I’m still trying to get my brain around the series being complete. It’s still very strange.

John Zebedee is still ongoing over on Vella, and if you’re a Prime member, they’re giving away tokens. Today is the last day to claim 200 tokens to use to read anything in the Vella library (since I told you, I hope you’d read mine! But it’s cool if you don’t.) I haven’t started the process on getting a cover for The Chronicles of John Zebedee, but that will be soon, and I’ll have the collected works up in March of 2023. That’s about all I know for the 2023 publishing schedule at the moment.

That’s about it for this week. See you next time!

(And for those who were curious? Yes, witchy tights. They’re sparkly. Got them from Snag.)

Cover Reveal!

If you’re subscribed to my newsletter, you saw these on Friday. (If you’re not… well, you could be. There’s a sign-up widget either to the right, or down below this post, depending on if you’re using an laptop or a mobile device.)

Anyway… Patreon patrons saw these first, newsletter subscribers got them Monday, and now here’s the big, wide reveal of the final two covers of the Heir to the Firstborn series!

I think Visions in Smoke is my new favorite of my covers. Preorders for both books are open now on Amazon, and will be coming shortly everywhere else. Click the covers to be taken to the preorder.

The other big announcement that went out on Friday was that Riverdale Avenue Books has acquired The White Raven: Morrigan’s Heir! Okay, blog readers knew that two weeks ago — sometimes, there is a benefit to following both the blog and the newsletter, since the blog is weekly and the newsletter is once a month.

As usual with me and writing historical fantasy, I have to look things up. A lot. So this week, my topics have been Roman medicine, surgical techniques (including the use of fibulae to close wounds!) and what would Cretic wine have tasted like (Cretic wine being wine laced with opium.) And I’m not even done with chapter one!

(Yeah, I’m not done with chapter one after two weeks. The writing has been slow.)

In other news, the final part of the Chronicles of John Zebedee went live on Kindle Vella this morning. It ends tomorrow, so if you want to read the first two parts of John Zebedee, you can find Heir to the Elvenlands here, and Monstrous Town here.
Oh, me, will you look at the time? It’s right at this moment 1:30 PM and I have to leave in twenty minutes. That’s all for this week. Stay safe, everyone.

Monday, Monday

It’s late (well, it’s late for me) on a Monday, and I’ve finally gotten the time to sit and actually write something. Which is about par for my days these days. If the words aren’t already on the page, I’m not getting to them. So The Sea Prince is officially on the schedule for 2023. I’m focusing on edits for the moment.

I finished my first read through of Children of Dreams and… yeah, there are some rewrites in that book’s future. It will probably be the book that changes the most from the version that went live on Patreon. And I’m okay with that! My plans right now are to finish the rereads of Wings of Air (currently in process) and Visions in Smoke (formerly Heir to the Firstborn: The Crossroads), and then get the rewrites done and get the book to Darling Editor. I may be pushing it on time, but I think it will still come out in November. But notice that I haven’t yet set up the preorder…

Preorder will go live once I hand the rewrites off. And the updated copies of books one through four will go live once Darling Editor has a chance to go through them. The paperbacks are down, and will remain down until closer to when Children of Dreams releases.

And, since books one through four aren’t going to get spiffy new preorders and ISBNS and rereleases, (because they don’t need them) I’ll just go ahead and show you those covers.

Aren’t those gorgeous???? No, you don’t get the last two yet. Not until the preorders are set. I’ve been using GetCovers.com for these, and they have been a joy to work with.

It’s time for me to start at least thinking about thinking about a cover for The Chronicles of John Zebedee. I can publish the book thirty days after the last episode goes live. Which means that The Chronicles of John Zebedee will be coming out in early March of 2023. Get Covers lets you hand them images for inspiration, so they’ll be getting the three Vella covers that I put together. (In order: John Zebedee and the Heir of the Elvenlands, John Zebedee and the Monstrous Town, and John Zebedee Meets the Witch Queen of the Elvenlands.)

And that’s about all in this neck of the woods. Newsletter will be going out in a few days, and I need to figure out what recipe is going in it. Hrm….
