Well, That Certainly Took Off…

Well, That Certainly Took Off…

Friday night, we went out to dinner, and I made SURE that we were home in time to watch Artemis come home. And once she was down and safe, I posted something to my social media. And… it certainly took off.

I’ve never had a post ever that gained the traction this one did. Friends have been tagging me when they see it, so I know how far it’s gone. And I’ve tripped on one person who stole the post and claimed it for their own, which… I suppose that means I’m a real writer? (a real annoyed writer…)

Funny thing, though — I got part of the details wrong. The pieces of Challenger and Columbia were part of the heritage parts used to build the boosters, and were not carried aboard Integrity on her mission. But, as someone on Threads put it when I clarified my misunderstanding, they were still part of it. The sentiment holds even if their seats changed. Which I think is true. I also think that this mission healed the hearts of a lot of people who were watching in school and saw the moment when Challenger touched the face of God.

The other part that I got wrong? I had NO idea that there’s another piece of the Wright brothers’ plane further out in space. It’s on Mars, and it’s inside of Ingenuity, the tiny helicopter that went to space with her big sister Perseverance. The spirit of the first powered flight in human history lifted the first powered flight on another planet. That’s kinda cool.

Yes, I am a space geek. What’s your point?

And Now… The Back Side of Luna!

And Now… The Back Side of Luna!

I’m writing this up while I watch the Artemis II flyby of the Moon, and I really, REALLY need someone to say “And now… the back side of Luna!” I doubt anyone will (or if they did, I missed it.)

Screenshot from my other monitor.

I keep saying I’m tired of living in unprecedented times, but for this unprecedented time? I’ll take it. The last time we went to the Moon, I was eight months old.

And I just found out about the message that Jim Lovell (Commander of Apollo 13) recorded before he died, and that NASA played just before the Moon flyby started, welcoming the Artemis team to his old neighborhood. Sniffle. Snorfle. Moon dust in my eyes.

It’s a little hard to focus on what I’m doing, because I keep stopping to look at the other screen.

This weekend I’ll be at the Storyteller Summit, a reader event at the Oviedo Mall, and in a change of my usual day, I’ll be presenting a panel entitled Book Events for Fun and (Hopefully) Profit. We’ll be covering table display dos and don’ts, table behavior dos and don’ts, and effective selling techniques. I’ve never done this panel before, and I really hope it goes well! (If you’re going to be at the Storyteller Summit, the panel will be at 2PM.)

Enough time has passed that the feed is starting to show footage of the side of the moon we don’t usually see. So. Much. Texture. And they’re saying there’s COLOR. The far side of the moon is green and brown!

And now… the back side of Luna.

Do NOT Pinch Me!

Do NOT Pinch Me!

It hasn’t been a week yet, and I swear that I’m still dreaming. If I am, do NOT pinch me!

Let me explain. The 11th annual Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off has started. This is my third time entering SPFBO, and I honestly had no expectations other than possibly getting some new reviews. I entered Written in Water three years ago, and Counsel of the Wicked two years ago. This year, I entered The Sea Prince.

The blog that was assigned The Sea Prince has one of the strictest judging criteria in the contest, They read the first 10% of each entrant, and decide which of those are strong enough to want to read more. They started their eliminations last week, and promised to update on every Wednesday.

Yesterday, I saw the Discord notification that they had released this week’s eliminations and their second semi-finalist. I clicked the notification and saw the graphic included The Sea Prince.

Then I saw the first response — “Congrats @Liz Schechter – The Sea Prince !! It was a great book and you deserve it!”

WAIT, WHAT????

The Sea Prince is a SPFBO 11 Semi-finalist!!!

To say that I’m shocked is like saying that Everest is a little tall.

The contest is only a month in, and it will take months before the winner is named. The field will get smaller, and the competition that much greater. The books will all be amazing… and I’m a part of that.

I’m dreaming.

Don’t pinch me.

Happy Book Day Eve!

Happy Book Day Eve!

Happy Book Day Eve to those who celebrate. I certainly do! Tomorrow is release day for The Coral Throne, which brings to a close a story that is old enough to drive in the state of Florida.

I’ve told this story before — in 2009, I woke up with this character in my head. His name was Tarjiaan, and he would not shut up. In the 45 minute drive to Ikea, I had most of the worldbuilding, and I actually ditched my family for about half an hour once we got there to go sit in the restaurant with a cup of coffee and write everything down. Then I shared the information with a writer friend, and we started writing what would become The Sea Prince. However, Tarjiaan stopped talking to me. Dead stop, do not pass go, do not collect $200. So things got put to the side.

Flash forward to 2023. I pulled the manuscript out from under the virtual bed, reread it (which I’d done probably about six times over the years), and realized where it was broken and how to fix it. What I felt on finishing The Sea Prince was, I imagine, the writing equivalent of summiting Mount Everest… except then I had to do it again because the story wasn’t done. I had to wrap things up and bring it all home. I had rewritten the synopsis for the second part, and I knew where it was going, but there were still some surprises (does anyone ever plan for the cat?) The transition felt rushed, and I had to rework that because there was not enough material for a third book.

Stop laughing. Even I can say that once.

And then it was done. And tomorrow, you all finally get to see the finished work.

It Snowed.

It Snowed.

Let me repeat that. IT SNOWED. Why is this so groundbreakingly weird? Because I live just north of Orlando. This is where people go to vacation AWAY from snow. It is not supposed to snow here! And yet, we had two nights of below freezing weather (in the 20s, with windchills between 8 and 11 degrees). We set our outdoor taps to drip into buckets overnight so they wouldn’t freeze, and woke up to frozen solid buckets.

It’s COLD.

And next week, it will be near 90. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m getting tired of weird. I’d like some boring. At least, boring where the weather is concerned.

I’ll settle for not freezing my tail off Thursday night when we head out to the Volusia Mall for the Galentine’s Day Gala at Native Home. Writers, artists, and purveyors of adult toys will be available for your shopping pleasure. Dress to impress (it is, after all, a gala!)

You are cordially invited to Native Home's Galentine's Day Gala. February 5th, 2026. 6-9PM.

In other news, the preorders for the ebook of The Coral Throne are going live, and the preorder for the paperback is coming. I love how the cover for The Coral Throne balances the cover for The Sea Prince. Fun fact — I first found and saved the stock images of Tarjiaan and Daanir years ago (they were first uploaded to Depositphotos in 2013,) and that image of Daanir changed how he appears in The Coral Throne. Both images came from the same photographer, who goes by Piolka on Depositphotos. They do beautiful work.

Work on King of Swords continues slowly — I came back to the manuscript to discover that I put it aside at the start of a sex scene, and I’ve said before how writing sex and violence both slow me down because I have to make sure of the blocking. Once this scene is done, the pace will pick up again… until the next sex scene or fight.

Back to work!

Today is About 40 Years Long…

Today is About 40 Years Long…

I keep thinking it has to be almost bedtime, but it’s not. It’s not even dark here yet. It’s just about 4:30 PM here, which means that in addition to being a Monday, today is about 40 years long.

Why is today being about 40 years long?

Because this past weekend was three days long. Three days of Maker Faire, where I am apparently a local celebrity. Now, I had no IDEA of this. None. Not until someone came by the table to say hi, and told me that when she’d mentioned seeing me, her adult daughter gasped, “She’s going to be there?”

Readers, you could have knocked me over with a feather. And it wouldn’t have had to be a heavy feather either, because I am TIRED. That was… a lot. A lot of a lot. A lot is legion. And I was not expecting it.

When we left the house Friday, I said to Darling Editor, “Today is Field Trip day. I don’t expect to make any sales today. It’ll mostly be networking and outreach.”

WRONG!

I’m not sure why, but I had more traffic and more interest (and more sales) at Maker Faire than at any book related event I’ve done this year. There were people I spoke to on Sunday who said “Yeah, I was there/came by the table yesterday, but I couldn’t get close enough to say hi.” I’m sold out of some titles, and low enough on others that I didn’t think I’d go home with any. Orders have been placed, and will hopefully be here before the Winter Bazaar Renaissance Festival on December 6th, which is our next show.

Maybe I’ll be awake by then.

A hero. A son of Eire. A reckoning long overdue.

Lorcan never asked for glory. Crowned a noble and hailed as a savior after crushing rebellion, he walks the marble halls adored by all—except himself. Haunted by prophetic visions, he sees not triumph, but torment: his family caged, his homeland threatened, and his cousin’s dark ambitions on the rise.

He knows where he must go.

Leaving behind the splendor of Empire, Lorcan returns to the emerald wilds of Eire, where ancient magic stirs and old loyalties are tested. Beside him stand his mates and his chosen kin—fierce, loyal, and willing to follow him into the heart of danger. But the blood that binds can also betray, and the most dangerous enemy may not be on the battlefield… but seated at his own family’s table.

Tenth Anniversary!

I have to lead with this gorgeous thing — the tenth anniversary cover for House of Sable Locks

Isn’t he LOVELY???

This went live sometime over the weekend, and I missed it until this morning, when I received a spam email from a book promoter about my “new book” House of Sable Locks.

That’s very much William… which is funny because that particular model is also on the cover of Infernal Machine! Clearly, the art director and I have similar tastes in steampunk cover models.

The tenth anniversary cover is still going out to all the booksellers and isn’t yet up everywhere. If you want one now, you can get it directly from the publisher.

In other news, I got the news this week that Written in Water was cut from SPFBO, and will not be continuing on in the contest. The reviewer was incredibly positive about the book, and loved the series as well. Really, I can’t complain — the entire experience has been amazing from start to finish. You can read the review here.

In and around working on The Sea Prince and Balance of Power, I’m planning out what the next book will be. Part of that depends on one thing that is out of my control — which books that are out for consideration sell. If I don’t have an answer for that by the time I finish with either of the two books I’m working on now, then I think the next thing I will write will be either The Iron Virgin (aka Pirate Princess), or Tower of Light (aka gay steampunk retelling of Metropolis). I’m not sure which, because it all depends on which one yells at me the loudest.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been doing this whole full-time writer thing over ten years now. What a trip this has been! I have to say, it’s not getting old — I love every minute of it!

Late Post, But A Good Reason….

This is posting rather late on Monday, but there’s a very good reason for the delay…

That’s the final wordcount on The White Raven: Morrigan’s Wrath. That’s a draft, folks!

The White Raven: Morrigan’s Wrath
(The White Raven duology, Book 2)

106550 / 106000 (100.52%)

So, now what? Now, this manuscript gets read over quickly, to make sure I didn’t forget any scenes that I meant to fill in later. I’ll compile it from Scrivener, and print it off… and then put it off to the side for a bit. I’ll be sitting on it until I get the edits back for Morrigan’s Heir, and then I’ll read both of them one right after the other. That way, I can be sure that the details in both agree. (and there are some edits that need to be added to Heir, because of things that changed in Wrath. And one character name that needs to be changed because the name Owyn is now retired.)

Once that’s done? I’m off for the summer! Which means… well, this house needs to be cleaned. And I have worldbuilding and research to work on. And SO MUCH READING to catch up on.

And I have a short story to write. There’s one thread in Wrath that didn’t get tied off, and one couple that’s getting their own short. But I’m in no rush.

In other news, Hidden Things is currently part of a giveaway, and you can check out the other books here. The giveaway runs until May 20th. Just in time for beach reading!

Since it’s late, that’s all there is. I’m going to bed now!

Now, this new edition contains two bits of new material. The first is old new — I wrote The Ice Raven for the Princes of Air launch ten years ago, and it was serialized on the Circlet Livejournal. It’s never before been available for sale.

The second new bit of material is an exciting announcement, because you get a sneak peak at the first chapter of The White Raven: Morrigan’s Heir… coming in 2023 from Riverdale Avenue Books!

Lorcan finally gets his own books! Two of them — I’m starting The White Raven: Morrigan’s Wrath today. (That was the mystery synopsis I was working on a few weeks back.)

Yes, I am still going to be working on The Sea Prince.

In other writing news, I finished the rewrite of Children of Dreams, and I’ll be setting up a preorder for that and Visions in Smoke this week.  I’ll post links to those on all the social media once they’re up. Bones of Earth went live last week, and is updating everywhere. Not sure what’s happening with the paperbacks — they’re listed as publishing, but Amazon hasn’t updated to the new information, and Barnes and Noble is still listing the old prices. Remember, if you find books with the old covers, it’s the old content.

Not much else to share, and I need to get on getting on to writing.

Have a great week!!!

New Things!

It’s been a WEEK, y’all. Three new things to discuss today, and only one of them is on the usual radar.

New Words!

Heir to the Firstborn: The Way Home
(Heir to the Firstborn, book 6)

81461 / 150000 (54.31%)
Of course there are new words. I’ve been working away at Heir to the Firstborn: The Way Home. If you follow me on Facebook, you may have caught a glimpse of some of those new words — there was one phrase in particular that struck me as amusing enough to share:
“You might as well spit on a fish for all the good it will do.”
Patreon readers haven’t yet met the character who says this, so that’s all you’re going to get.
There’s also been some more planning on Tales from the Arena: Dead Man’s Hand. I will hopefully get to that book late this year, but there are some other things that have to come first. Like finishing the revisions and re-release on the Rebel Mage books, for example. And prepping for the next thing on my list….
New Audiobooks!
Friday evening, I got the approval from ACX to start accepting auditions for the Hidden Things audiobook. I immediately sent the audition page to a narrator whom I’d picked out months ago… AND HE SAID YES!!! So Hidden Things will be narrated by Mark Oosterveen. I’ve already told him I’m interested in having him read all four books.
Putting together an audiobook is not cheap, even under royalty share. So I’m starting a Kickstarter to fund all four books. The Kickstarter will go LIVE on Wednesday, and we’ll have 60 days to raise $5000. You can click the link to follow on Kickstarter, which will notify you when the page goes live for bids.
New Awards!
I got an email out of the blue last week telling me that Hidden Things has been nominated for the Paranormal Romance Guild’s Reviewers Choice Award for Best of 2021 (I’m not sure what category), and that Swords of Charlemagne has been nominated for Best Series. I have no other information on that but OMG!!! More to come when I know more.
New Shop!
Conventions are starting to say, “Um…. maybe meeting in person isn’t a good idea” again. So, because I probably won’t have that many opportunities to get out and meet people and sell signed books this year, I’ve gone ahead and made a virtual dealer’s table! You can buy print books and I’ll ship them directly to you, personalized however you like. You can also buy the limited edition Swords of Charlemagne thumbdrive, which is a 2GB thumbdrive that contains all four books in mobi, epub and pdf formats.
And that is, I think, everything that happened this past week.
Wow!
