Romance Writer’s Weekly: What’s in Your Spotify?

Hello to everyone in the audio radiance! Welcome to my spot on the web. Now, if you’ve never been here before and are jumping in from Brenda Margriet’s blog,  just go on and make yourself comfortable while I introduce myself.

Hi, I’m Liz. I write Erotic Romance science fiction and fantasy, and I write New Adult fantasy romance. I’m probably best known for my Steampunk BDSM novel House of Sable Locks.

Here on my blog, I tend talk a lot about writing and my works-in-progress. Accountability helps keep me on target. I’m currently working on two pieces. The first is book three of my ongoing Patreon serial Heir to the Firstborn (a new adult fantasy romance. Forged in Fire, book two of Heir to the Firstborn was published just two weeks ago). The other work in progress is the first in an Erotic Paranormal Romance series that I’m tentatively calling Flesh and Blood. Book one is Blood Bound,  and you can find excerpts in my previous blog posts. It’s what I fondly call my BDSM Vampire series.

Now, I tend to listen to a lot of music when I’m writing, because it distracts the toddler part of my brain that wants to go play with new pens and coloring books and eat all the chocolate. If I turn on Spotify, I can focus more easily on words. I used to do this in grade school, and it drove my mother wild — she couldn’t understand how I could work with background noise. To me, though, it’s essential.

Now, what I listen to depends on what I’m writing. Ninety-five percent of the time, I’m listening to instrumentals. Words can be a distraction, because I like to sing along. Singing = not writing, at least for me. So instrumentals.  My current playlist of choice for instrumentals isn’t one that I made. It’s the house music from Eat Your Science, one of Alton Brown’s live shows. It’s all theme songs from classic science fiction TV and movies. My only complaint? There are only nineteen songs on the playlist, so it is over too soon!

Another playlist that I enjoy, and that is also too short, is courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda. His Write Your Way Out playlist is fun, and includes some artists that I hadn’t been familiar with before. I don’t listen to it as often as Eat Your Science, because lyrics. (Also, here’s a warning — this playlist has some explicit lyrics.)

Now, I do have my own playlists, and I’m playing with them a bit. When I wrote my BDSM Paranormal Romance Heart’s Master, I included a playlist in the endmatter of the book, made up of songs that were referred to during the course of the story. Music was fairly important in Heart’s Master — Stephen, the main character, was a triple threat (singer, dancer and actor) who lost his career  and his sight in a car accident. That accident also woke his magical abilities, and he discovers that he is a bard. And that there’s a mage in the Elvenlands who wants him dead.

I’m doing something similar in Blood Bound. There’s a playlist, but not because either main character is a performer. Well, one of them is a pole dancer, but that’s not his main job — Daniel is a bartender at night and a yoga teacher during the day.

In this book, each chapter title is the title of a song that matches the mood or the theme of the chapter. I set up a playlist in Spotify for the book, and the list and the link to this playlist will be included in the endmatter of the book.

Now, this is not the final version of the playlist, simply because I haven’t finished writing the book yet.  There are a couple of choices for chapters near the end that might change, if I find something that suits the mood better.  (Specifically? Chapter 19. I love Van Canto, but I’m not sure that particular song is what I want. However, I haven’t written chapter 19 yet. I know what’s going to happen in there, but until I have the words on the page, I won’t know for sure if that song is a good fit, or if the other song I’m thinking of will be better.)

And, because I am a masochist, I’ll be doing similar playlists for every book in this series (right now, I think there will be five books, with a possibility of seven. We’ll see.) So I have a master playlist where I’m collecting songs that I might use or that just put me in the right mood for writing this particular series.  There are several songs on the list that I’ve already earmarked for book three. (Yeah, I haven’t finished book one yet and am already planning book three. No, I won’t be jumping right to book three. Books happen in specific order — besides, if I write book three first, then I’ll just have to change it when I write book two and things happen that impact book three.)

Hopefully, your stop here has given you some new music to listen to, and some new books to enjoy while listening to that music. Your next stop on the merry webring is Jenna Da Sie’s blog. Let’s go see what she’s listening to today…

Works in Progress, week Four, Blood Bound and Bones of Earth

Bones of Earth
Heir to the Firstborn, Book 3

This week has been… interesting.  Dorian was supposed to be apocalyptic… but it apparently didn’t get the memo that said the apocalypse was supposed to be in Florida, not in the Bahamas or Nova Scotia. So we had three days of “What’s going to happen?” followed by one windy night and a lot of rain.

This led to three days of not a lot of work, a lot of stress baking, and me playing frantic catch-up the rest of the week.  With Blood Bound, that hasn’t been hard — the words are flowing nicely. I’ve also got a Spotify playlist, if you want to hear what I’m listening to while I write each chapter — each song is the corresponding chapter, and is either mentioned in the text, or reflects the mood.

With Bones of Earth, I’m still finding a new focal character’s voice, and she’s giving me a hard time about it. So it’s slow going. I think I finally have her, though. So we’ll see if I can pick up the pace. However, next weekend I also have Keiser Supercon on Saturday, and a 5K on Sunday morning. I might just have brains made from tapioca by Sunday afternoon. Here’s hoping the words come easily this week, so I don’t have to worry about that!

I’m expecting edits back on Forged in Fire sometime this week, so I’m going to say that yes, we’re on track for the October 19th release date.

And that’s about all in my neck of the woods.  Here, have an excerpt:

***

“Itami? Is that you?”

The voice was accented — Eastern Europe, maybe? — and very deep. And the effect it had on Hiro was electric — the vampire sat up straight, eyes wide, looking past Daniel. Then he laughed.

“Liski! I was not expecting you until next week!” He looked around the table. “Please, if you’ll excuse me?”

“Go ahead,” Mama said, making a shooing motion. Hiro grinned and got up from the table. Daniel turned in his chair and watched as Hiro walked over to a big man, who was accompanied by a pretty, petite woman.

“He looks like a bear,” Trace murmured. Daniel nodded. The name sounded familiar. Liski…?

“Holy shit,” he breathed. “That’s Grigori Liski.”

“Who?” Trace asked.

“Head Justiciar,” Daniel answered. “Oh, crap. They’re coming over.” He was out of his chair in a minute, but not before Trace was on his feet, and standing between Daniel and the newcomer.

“Grigori, if I may present my…” he paused, and for a moment looked perplexed.

“Friends and employees,” Trace supplied. “It’s complicated.”

Grigori laughed. “It is always complicated with this one,” he said. He smiled and offered his hand.

“Grigori Liski. My bond, Clara Underwood.”

“Trace Maurin,” Trace answered. “My mother, Antoinette.”

“Oh, do not stand, Madam,” Grigori said. He came around the table and bowed over Mama Maurin’s hand. “A pleasure to meet you.” He came back around the table, looking at Daniel. He smiled and held out his hand. “And you. You must be Daniel.”

Daniel blinked and shook the vampire’s hand, feeling suddenly dwarfed. Grigori had to be at least 6’5”. He glanced at Hiro. Had Hiro been talking about him? Wait, what was he thinking? Of course Hiro had talked to his superiors about Daniel. “Yes, sir,” he answered. “I’ve heard about you. It’s very nice to meet you.”

“I could say the same,” Grigori answered. “I have heard your name. And yes, it is nice to meet you. Now, if you’ll excuse me? I need to speak to Itami for a moment.”

He bowed again, and escorted Hiro away from the table. Daniel sat back down, trying to fight the urge to turn and watch.

“He’s been talking about you?” Trace whispered.

“I don’t think he can hear you this far away,” Daniel whispered back. He gave in and glanced over his shoulder, only to find that Hiro was looking at him. Their eyes met, and to Daniel’s shock, Hiro blushed.

Daniel heard Trace cough. “Didn’t know vampires could do that,” he said. “I told you, Danny. He’s in to you.”

Daniel swallowed. “Yeah. I know.”

It was definitely too late to turn back now.

Frozen sexuality

If you’ve been anywhere on the internet today, you know that Disney released a video of the big number from the new movie Frozen. If you missed it, here. I’ll wait

Now, I haven’t seen the movie yet. We’re waiting for Winter Break, so we can all go together. But I’m VERY interested in this movie. Not only is this Disney’s first stab at feminism (and, from what I’ve heard, they do it very well. What took you so long, Disney?), but Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) is being heralded as Disney’s first queer heroine.* Granted, it’s all subtext. But if this video is any indication, that is some really durned loud subtext.

Now, I’m not going to comment on that. I haven’t seen the movie, and I’m basing this all on a three-and-a-half-minute showstopping song. What I noticed in that 3:38 is Elsa’s sexual awakening. When we first see her, she is completely covered from neck to toes (minus the one glove). Her hair is bound up tight, and she reads as being very young (and isn’t it something that you can get pixels to project body language?) She’s completely repressed, and admits it: “Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal, don’t feel.”

Be the good girl.

Remember. Good girls don’t do that.

Then she turns her back on what she’s been taught, turns away from everything she’s been lead to be afraid of, and accepts herself without worrying about anyone else : “I don’t care what they’re going to say.”

And then the cloak goes. That first layer of repression is gone, and she blossoms, casting off her old world for the one that she creates.

Then she lets her hair down. And we go from little girl to siren in one swell foop. Cleavage and dress slit up her thigh, possibly barefoot (hard to tell in the clip). And that swagger! This is a woman who has claimed her sexuality, and isn’t afraid of herself any more.

Honestly, if I can get that out of three and a half minutes, I wonder what I’ll get out of the rest of the movie???

*(We’re not counting what they’ve done with Once Upon a Time here. OUaT is for adults. They have a lot more leeway with what they’ll do with sex and sexual innuendo after 8PM)

New Music and inspiration

So, I’m plugging along here. Page proofs for Princes of Air came in and went back out about two weeks ago, so that is coming closer to fruition. I think I’ve heard back from all the beta readers on House of Sable Locks, so now I’m going to start shopping that around. My son went back to school yesterday, and I’m slowly getting used to the fact that this house is QUIET when there isn’t a five-year-old running around.

I’m working on finishing my world-building for Tales from the Arena, and then I’m going to let that percolate a little while I get back into the right headspace for Drum Mage. Let me get the piece that is mostly done and needs the most saving out of the way first, right?  And since it is too quiet to work, I have Pandora on in the background. I love Pandora. Especially since they pull up stuff like THIS:

Needless to say, I’ve ordered all three of the CDs. This is going to be some GREAT writing music!!
