thinking thinky thoughts

On Your Mark…

This week starts the race that will be July. I have just over a week before I leave for the RWA Retreat, and I have THINGS that must get done between now and then.

Things I need to do:

  • Finalize the presentation that I’ll be giving at the retreat.
  • Save presentation to a thumbdrive  and put it in my travel purse.
  • Email the presentation to the office (just in case)
  • Finish the video logs for Unit 11. (These will be DONE before I leave, durn it.)
  • Write the Unit 11 quiz
  • Decide which knitting project I’m taking with me for the Fiber meet-up I’m hosting.
  • Decide which research materials I want to bring (Hrm… Tower of Light or SooperSekrit Edwardian-era project?)
  • Write up a packing list
  • Pull out my suitcase
  • Pick out clothes

And in and around all of that? Working on Heir to the Firstborn, prepping for the Ashes and Light release on the 20th, and maybe going out for dinner (to an actual restaurant – gasp!) for our anniversary right before I leave.

Heir to the Firstborn
(Heir to the Firstborn, book 5)

118734 / 150000 (79.16%)

Heir to the Firstborn proceeds nicely, if slowly. I sincerely doubt that the 150,000 word target will stand for another week, which will then lead me to the question of… one book or two.

I know. I KNOW! I said this was going to be one book. But, I also said that about Wings of Air, and look where that got us (hint — 118,734 words into the second book of what was supposed to be one book.) Heir to the Firstborn is going to be massive. And while that doesn’t much matter in serial or as an ebook. In print, that’ll be a problem. Because there are only so many pages you can put into a trade paperback before it falls apart.

So we may very well have Heir to the Firstborn: The Progress and Heir to the Firstborn: <something that has to do with the second half of the book>

(Book one may not be The Progress. I have to decide. Book two will either be The Crossroads or The Way Home. We’ll see.)

But we’ll also get to meet an interesting character in that half of the book. I started writing his scenes already, and I love him to bits. Nope, not telling.

Now, if I do break this into two books, then I will definitely make the November release date that I was worried that I’d miss, because that part of the book is done.  I will need to make new cover art for the second book, those. Not a huge problem there.

I’ll make up my mind about it at the retreat.

Writing is a Solitary Profession

Most of the time, we’re alone in our rooms, banging our heads on the keyboard and drinking something caffeinated. Or, if you’re writing later in the day, non-caffeinated. Perhaps alcoholic. Or maybe not. I’m so not judging your choice of libations. Right now? I’m drinking water and writing this blog, and thinking about the next thing that’ll happen in Heir to the Firstborn. (Owyn is in trouble. Again. When is Owyn not in trouble?)

Heir to the Firstborn
(Heir to the Firstborn, book 5)

Writing is solitary. Except, of course, for when it isn’t. This morning, I spent an hour interviewing the fantastically funny Amy Christine Parker about scene architecture and story structure, and during the interview, this came up in conversation:

Being a writer is fun. You get to do things like interview other writers. You get to go to conferences and meet the people who’ve read and loved your books (or people who haven’t read your work yet, and have just discovered that you exist.) You get to meet the writers whose work you’ve loved, and learn that they’re really cool people (most of the time).

The actual writing part? That can be hard — in 1949, someone asked sports columnist Red Smith if writing a daily column was difficult. His response? “Why, no. You simply sit down at the typewriter, open your veins, and bleed.”  Sometimes, you just really stare at the screen, or at the page, or at the backs of your eyelids, and you wonder where all the voices in your head went (I do hear my characters — that’s how I know I’ve got them figured out.)

I have two partial manuscripts I’d love to finish, but the characters won’t talk to me anymore. There’s something wrong in the outline, and I haven’t been able to figure out what or how to fix it. (I talk about them every so often — The Sea Prince is one. The Willow Sword is the other.) Now, it took me six years to figure out what was broken with Heart’s Master, and finish that one, so I have high hopes that one of these years, you’ll see a book cover with one of those titles, and my name on it. But not until I figure out what’s broken and how to fix it. I’ll be taking another stab at The Willow Sword once I finish Heir to the Firstborn. Maybe this time, I’ll pull a hat out of a rabbit.

No, I don’t have that backwards. Any magician can pull a rabbit out of a hat. Who pulls a hat out of a rabbit? A really GOOD magician.

Or a writer.

Nibbled to Death by Ducks

You know that saying, right? About being nibbled to death by ducks, where all the little annoyances and irritations just seem to add up and up until they’re one big collective frustration?

You’re probably looking at your screen right now and thinking “Liz, it’s 2020. OF COURSE I KNOW THIS FEELING!!!”

We all know this feeling. We’ve been living with hypothetical carnivorous ducks for six months now, and it’s HARD!

I have my coping mechanisms to deal with the stress. One of them is exercise — getting the endorphins flowing. It’s why I exercise like a beast — I tell people it helps control the brain weasels.

Another one is my writing. I will take my frustrations out on my characters. It’s cathartic, but it also means that I would not want to meet any of my characters in a dark alley!

And… well… chocolate. Can’t lie. There’s chocolate.

What do you do when it gets to be too much?

Writing last week was slow. I got a chapter finished in both Wings of Air and John Zebedee, which is my new goal for the week. One chapter is a win. More than that is gravy.

Did rather a lot of RWA stuff. We’re getting the new Board up to speed. It’s weird being one of the experienced Board members, when I’ve only been on the Board five months.

And we had our other weirdnesses — last Monday I ran out to pick up groceries. When I left, the house was FINE.  When I came back…

That piece is called fascia, and it’s thin aluminum. We’re not sure what exactly happened there — it looks like someone tried to rip open the roof the way you rip into an envelope with a pull-tab. I made some calls, set up some estimates… and we discovered the problem with dangly,  thin aluminum.

It swings.

Not into the window, thank goodness. It swings laterally. Now if you look close at that picture, you can see the edge of the window well that sticks out of the house, right behind the tree. That window well is the Teen’s room.

Now imagine, if you will… a quiet Sunday morning. A tropical disturbance pops up just off the coast of Florida, right about between Titusville and Daytona Beach. Marches inland. High winds…

WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM.

It’s stopped banging against the house now. But that’s only because it twisted in the wind, and is now sitting on the roof. Not entirely sure how that happened either. Also not complaining, because it’s not banging into the house anymore!

We’re getting this fixed, because it needs to be fixed. But really….

Carnivorous ducks. Carnivorous ducks EVERYWHERE.

What Did I Come in Here For?

So I’m sitting and staring at the screen, and trying to remember just what I did over the past week. And I can’t think of a single thing. Not one. I mean, I know I did stuff. I wrote — my totals changed. I went grocery shopping. I exercised. I did my daily tarot pull, and I cleaned. My daily bullet journal shows I did all that.

I just don’t remember any of it. The past week is a blur.

I imagine it’s because I did much the same thing last week as I did the week before that… and before that… and before that. It’s been a long, weird pause, and it’s all blending together in my head. Things are all soft and smudgy and indistinct, like trying to see through the fog we’d have some mornings on the way to school.

No fog these days. At least, not so I would notice. My commute these days is up the stairs to make sure someone is in class on time, and down the stairs to exercise, then up the stairs after breakfast and shower to get to writing.  My house is too climate controlled for fog.

Has anyone else noticed that they’re more tired these days? And busier than they were when we were all going out and doing all the things? I think it’s because we’re trying to fill the gaps with distractions, and exhausting ourselves in the process.  That, and we’re exhausted just from the sheer weight of the uncertainty surrounding us.

I’m hearing from a lot of creatives that it’s been really hard to write/draw/do anything since quarantine started.  Even if you have time to sit, and no immediate distractions, all of the Muses seem to be in their own quarantine, and they’re not sharing our bubble.

How do you keep the creative juices flowing, when there’s so much going on?

For me? It’s one word at a time. Some days, it’ll take me all day to make 200, 300, 500 words. Some days, I won’t make that at all. Some days — usually the days I have Circlet Writing group — I might just make 1500 in two hours, because peer pressure is a thing, and it’s a thing that can actually work to your advantage if you use it right.

I have found that I have to keep writing or the demons win. The demons in my head, that is. It’s the same reason I exercise. It calms the brain weasels and allows me to function. So if I exercise, I’m more able to focus. And if I write, everything else will be okay. Because I know that the characters in my books are guaranteed that happy ending. So if I give it to them, maybe I’ll get one, too? Maybe we’ll all get one?

Sympathetic magic is also a thing, after all.

I’m not the only one thinking this, or something like it. Romance sales are going gangbusters. Because right now, we all need that happy ever after, even vicariously. We all need to escape.

We all need that little bit of magic. That little bit of hope.

49 days to the election. Vote Blue. We need the hope.

Let's Keep in Touch!

Please wait...

Thanks for signing up!

I’m really kind of amazing that I got that much done this past week. The RWA held their first ever Virtual Conference, and it was AMAZING!!! The panels went off brilliantly, and I only saw one tech snafu all weekend, and the meetups were fantastic, and the only thing missing was the hugging.

And I came away with a realization that I could be doing more. So… I’m doing more.

I’m starting a newsletter. It’ll probably be a once a month thing, with some excerpts just for newsletter subscribers, and news, and the current state of where things are in Liz-Land, at least in terms of publishing. Maybe recipes. It’ll be fun. There’s a place off to the right (or there should be) to sign up. Or you can sign up at the end of the post.

I’m also working on a logo, which you might have seen rough designs of on Instagram over the weekend. Right now, I have something that looks like an odd Pokemon. I’ll see if I can work it out to be a little less “gotta-catch-em-all.”

Although, if you want to catch all my books, I’m certainly not going to say no!

There was a great informal meeting on swag, and we got to talking about how swag needs to change when conferences are all online. And in talking about digital swag, I got to thinking about my first ever swag — those naughty dice from RWA Nationals in 2017.

It wouldn’t be hard to code a naughty dice roller, now would it? With interspersed book covers and links to my sales pages?

Like the original naughty dice, this idea made me giggle. A lot. So it’s something else that I’ll eventually play with. (No, I’m not farming this one out to Teen Boy. Even though he is better than I am at Java.)

Conference is over now (sadness!), and I’m back to work. Today is sort of a limbo day. It’s the last day of the RWA interim board service, and tomorrow starts the new board’s year of service. But the interim board really doesn’t have anything to DO today except breath. So that’s what I’m doing. Breathing.

And writing. Because I have to catch up on my words.

.

Ummm… hi…

Been absent a while.  Part of it was that right after I finished writing Written in Water, and immediately after I printed the manuscript for editing, my laptop died. Near as we can tell, the motherboard went, and took the SSD with it. When we took the SSD and mounted it in another computer, there was no there there.  I had just backed up my files, so I didn’t lose anything but some old emails (because I had to forget to back up just one thing…)

I’m now on my new baby — a very nice Lenovo Thinkpad. My first writing computer was a Thinkpad, and it lasted seven years and five novels. The two Dells I’ve had since then? Not so much. (The one that just fried was not even two years old. A refurb, so no warranty.)

While waiting for the new laptop, I finished my read-through on Written in Water, passed it on to another editor, and now have all the edits and suggestions back. I’ll be incorporating those in to the manuscript, and hope to have an ebook ready to go by Valentines Day.

There was also this holiday… I can say that the extra ticket events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are indeed worth it.

There were treat stations (sadly, not much was offered that was both gluten free AND chocolate free, but when I spoke to Guest Relations about that, they comped us some lovely treats from the Confectionary). They also pulled out all the stops for the fireworks, and (according to a certain young man of my acquaintance) launched everything but the cow! It was daylight-bright in Fantasyland at 10PM.

I can say that I have a new favorite restaurant in the Magic Kingdom — Skipper’s Canteen is a MUST. The food is much more interesting than anywhere else in this park, and the schtick reminds me of the late-lamented Adventurer’s Club. For example, I had the Sustainable Fish (Not Pirhana). It SAYS that on the menu!

So, what am I up to now? Well, the synopsis of Forged in Fire is almost done. I’m just about to the big reveal, which leads directly to the black moment that will lead us into Bones of Earth. I’ll be starting Forged in Fire probably in a week or so, so there might not be a break in the action over on Patreon once Written in Water ends. I’m gearing up to start Table of Stone, too, so I can bring Swords of Charlemagne to a close. I’ve got a busy 2019 ahead, and I can’t wait!

And that’s where I am in my little corner of writer land.

Mirror: Titles

It’s becoming more clear to me that Heir to the Firstborn is, in fact, the name of the series and not the name of the first book. Which means that in starting to look at covers, I’m also starting to think about titles.

I suppose it makes sense to riff on elements, since this started as the Elemental project. And I do already know the title of the first book. That was the easy one.

So, in no particular order, here are the tentative titles:

  • Written in Water (Book 1)
  • Forged in Fire
  • Bones of Earth
  • Wings of Air

Thoughts?
